Valued at 575.2 million Ukrainian hryvnias (approximately $14.478.456,98), these acquisitions are part of Ukraine's broader objective to acquire a total of 20,000 DJI drones through the Prozorro platform. Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Dmytro Klimenkov, highlighted the importance of drones in modern warfare, noting their potential to enhance the speed, accuracy, and flexibility of the armed forces. He also noted the necessity of integrating these technologies with existing military strategies to strengthen national defense. The contracts were awarded after a competitive bidding process on the Prozorro platform, which involved multiple suppliers, aiming to secure favorable prices for the state. Maryna Bezrukova, Director of the Defense Procurement Agency, noted the significance of competition in driving down costs, citing the participation of multiple suppliers in auctions. The specific contract prices were UAH 126.9 thousand ($3,194.22) for each DJI Mavic 3E and UAH 194.2 thousand ($4,888.24) for each DJI Mavic 3T, each inclusive of three additional batteries and a charger. Delivery of the initial batches of these drones has already begun, with distribution to military units currently underway. Title: Global; Defense expenditure reached $2443 Billion in 2023
Deadline:
Country:
Description
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report on global military spending trends in 2023, released on April 22, 2024, global military expenditures reached an unprecedented level of $2443 billion, marking a 6.8% increase from the previous year, the sharpest rise since 2009. While this increase can partly be attributed to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the report highlights a universal uptrend in defense spending across all regions, driven by heightened tensions in Asia and instability in the Middle East. In 2023, the United States led global military spending with a total of $916 billion, followed by China and Russia, with significant increases also recorded by other major economies. This rise reflects a broader trend where countries prioritize military capabilities in response to an increasingly volatile global security landscape. According to Nan Tian, a senior researcher at SIPRI, this trend could further feed a spiral of action and reaction in global military engagements. Russia's military spending significantly increased by 24% to approximately $109 billion, while Ukraine, amid ongoing conflict and receiving substantial military aid, notably raised its defense budget by 51% to $64.8 billion. This made Ukraine the eighth largest military spender globally, with spending now nearly 59% of Russia's. NATO members collectively accounted for $1341 billion, or 55% of total global military expenditures, with European members notably increasing their share to the highest level in a decade. The context of the war in Ukraine has fundamentally altered the security landscape for Europe, driving military spending higher as countries reassess their defense needs.

Title: Portugal; MoD confirms F-35 fighter order
Deadline:
Country:
Description
In an interview with Diario de Noticias on April 12, 2024, the Portugal Air Force Chief of Staff, General João Cartaxo Alves, confirmed that the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter will be the replacement for the F-16M Fighting Falcon. The decision is part of an effort to maintain alignment with most European allies who have already initiated transitions to the F-35, according to the General. The replacement of the F-16M is deemed necessary to preserve the operational credibility and strategic relevance of the Air Force, as the F-35 Lightning II exhibits several advantages compared to the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The F-35 features stealth technology, which reduces its visibility to radar, unlike the F-16 which lacks this capability. Additionally, the F-35 is equipped with more advanced sensors and a sophisticated avionics system that provides improved situational awareness through data integration from multiple sources. The F-35 also supports a wider range of missions, including air-to-air combat, air-to-ground strikes, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance tasks, enabled by its integrated systems. In contrast, while the F-16 is noted for its agility and has been a reliable aircraft for various missions over the years, it does not offer the same level of sensor integration or stealth capabilities as the F-35. The F-35 also generally carries a larger payload and has a longer range than the F-16, which can enhance its operational flexibility in combat scenarios.

Amidst the intense conflict in Ukraine, robotic systems have emerged as vital assets on the battlefield, prompting Russian engineers to continue innovating in this new military technology. Let's take a closer look at the progress of Russia's military robotization. Several systems were showcased during an exhibition in Russia on 17 April 2024, including a UGV ambulance equipped with grenade launchers. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu examined over 30 samples of specialized weapons and military equipment, with a particular focus on military robots. He emphasized the significance of a new autonomous fire support system, stressing its role in assault operations and issuing orders for its enhancement with a machine gun. Russia also showed great interest in a UGV ambulance with grenade launchers. In May, Russian troops will receive the first 30 samples of robotic transport platforms intended for the delivery of materiel, as informed by the Russian Defense Minister. "The Defense Minister of the Russian Federation was briefed that by the end of next month, the first 30 samples will be manufactured for delivery to the troops," stated the military department. During the event, the head of the Defense Ministry specifically ordered the immediate launch of mass production for a promising ground-based medical robotic system designed to evacuate wounded soldiers from the front line. "The urgency for this vehicle is paramount. It should be dispatched to the unit within the next few days and commence operations. There is no greater priority than preserving human life," emphasized the minister. Another development is the "Marker" combat robot, initially designed as a versatile platform. Adapted to target and neutralize NATO-grade armored vehicles, this robotic complex has proven its effectiveness in the conflict zone. Equipped with advanced targeting capabilities, including electronic catalogs of visible and infrared spectrums, the Marker can identify and prioritize enemy military hardware with precision. The "Sosna-N" anti-sniper system, developed by the Polyus Research Institute, detects and disrupts sniper activities with remarkable accuracy. Meanwhile, the wheeled cargo drone "Cherepakha," designed by Argo, facilitates the transport of munitions and supplies to frontline soldiers. Furthermore, heavy automated demining systems like the "Stalker" and compact unmanned ground vehicles such as the "Scorpion" play crucial roles in demining and neutralizing explosives. The deployment of remote-controlled sapper robots like the "Pitbull" and the "Partisan" underscores Russia's commitment to leveraging robotic technology for reconnaissance and assault missions in challenging terrain.
