Title: Latvia; Army favors Korean K21 IFV in upcoming tender
Deadline:
Country:
Description
Citing information reported by the South Korean business magazine "Business Korea" on March 27, 2023, Latvia appears to be leaning towards enhancing its military capabilities with the addition of South Korea's advanced K21 Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs). Manufactured by Hanwha Aerospace, the K21 is in the running to become the cornerstone of Latvia's armed forces' combat vehicles arsenal. Latvia's Ministry of Defense is in the midst of an extensive evaluation process to select a suitable IFV to increase its armed forces' combat capabilities. The project outlines the acquisition of 100 state-of-the-art IFVs to bolster the nation's defense capabilities. Among the contenders are Hanwha Aerospace's K21, the ASCOD by General Dynamics European Land Systems, and the Tulpar from the Turkish defense manufacturer, Otokar. Over a rigorous three-week testing phase conducted in October 2023, the K21 underwent comprehensive assessments focusing on its mobility and firepower capabilities. According to the tests conducted by the Latvian armed forces, the K21 emerged as a frontrunner, outperforming its competitors significantly in both evaluated aspects. The vehicle's superior firepower, coupled with its competitive pricing—being 30-40% cheaper than its counterparts—has positioned it as the likely choice for Latvia.

Title: Germany; Army replaces Wiesel-1 with BOXER fire support AFVs
Deadline:
Country:
Description
The German Army has announced an upgrade to its infantry support capabilities with the introduction of the new Boxer Heavy Weapon Carrier for the Infantry, according to information published on the German Army website on March 21, 2024. This advanced vehicle, armed with a 30mm automatic cannon and MELLS anti-tank guided missile system, is set to replace the Wiesel 1, an airborne tracked armored vehicle armed 20mm automatic cannon or anti-tank guided missile system, marking a significant enhancement in the firepower and versatility of the German forces. Developed by Rheinmetall for the German Army, has served as a light armored fighting vehicle since the late 1980s. Designed initially for air-transportable support in airborne operations, the Wiesel has seen various adaptations to meet different battlefield roles, including configurations armed with a 20 mm automatic cannon and TOW anti-tank missile system. These will now give way to the more advanced MELLS, a multirole lightweight guided missile system, signifying a strategic shift in infantry support armament. Based on the Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle (CRV) used by the Australian Defence Force, the new carrier inherits the robust 8x8 wheeled design and includes a two-person Lance turret for enhanced reconnaissance and firepower. This integration signifies a collaboration of proven platforms and technologies to create a formidable asset for the German infantry.

Title: Russia; Air Force to receive new FAB-3000 aerial bombs
Deadline:
Country:
Description
In a striking development amid ongoing military operations in Ukraine, Russia has commenced mass production of the FAB-3000, recognized as one of the most destructive aerial bombs globally. This pivotal advancement was announced by Russian Defense Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu during his visit to an aviation bomb production facility in the Nizhny Novgorod region on March 21, 2024. This initiative marks a critical expansion in Russia's military capabilities, particularly emphasizing its strategic implications for the war in Ukraine. Russian Defense Minister, General Sergei Shoigu detailed an ambitious expansion in the production of aerial munitions, highlighting the FAB-3000's strategic importance. Alongside, production of the FAB-1500 will be doubled, and there will be a significant surge in the manufacture of FAB-500 bombs. The FAB-3000M-54, a newly developed super-heavy aerial bomb, is specifically designed for strategic use by the Tu-22M3 Heavy Bombers, emphasizing its pivotal role in the current conflict dynamics. The minister shared impressive advancements in the facility's productivity, with a reported fivefold increase in aviation and artillery weapons production over the previous year. This leap in production efficiency is attributed to the revitalization and modernization of manufacturing capabilities, facilitated by the integration of state-of-the-art technology. During his visit, Shoigu also reviewed the progress in artillery ammunition production for Hyacinth guns, with a new workshop under construction aimed at further boosting production capabilities. The FAB-3000 is a testament to the engineering prowess of conventional munitions, weighing approximately 3,000 kg and carrying 1,400 kg of TNT. Title: Iraq; MoD plans to acquire modern air defense systems
Deadline:
Country:
Description
As reported by The Defense Post on March 20, 2024, Iraq is currently evaluating its options for acquiring new anti-aircraft weapons to enhance its air defense capabilities, as outlined by spokesperson Major General Yehia Rasool. The country has initiated discussions with various nations, although the details regarding potential vendors and the allocated budget remain undisclosed. This initiative is in response to increasing regional threats, and the procurement aligns with Iraq's recent acquisition of French radars. Major General Rasool mentioned that these new anti-aircraft systems would be integrated with the country’s existing radar systems, which span low, medium, and high ranges, to form a more cohesive air defense network. As of 2023, the Iraqi Air Defense Command maintained an operational force of 5,000 personnel. Its structure is composed of distinct units, each specializing in various air defense roles. There is one Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) battalion that operates Russian Pantsir-S1 systems, another battalion equipped with American AN/TWQ-1 Avenger systems, and a third battalion that uses upgraded Soviet Igla-S systems. Additionally, the command includes an Anti-Aircraft Artillery (ADA) battalion utilizing ZU-23-2 and S-60 anti-aircraft guns, aimed at addressing different aerial threat levels with a combination of missile and artillery systems. In terms of equipment, the Iraqi Air Defense Command deploys multiple systems designed for specific defensive tasks against aerial targets. The AN/TWQ-1 Avenger and 9K338 Igla-S systems serve as point-defense solutions, whereas the 96K6 Pantsir-S1 units are employed for both short to medium-range air defense, combining missile and gun capabilities. For direct anti-aircraft artillery, the command utilizes Soviet-era 23mm ZU-23-2 and 57mm S-60 towed guns.

Title: Argentina; Advanced negotiations to acquire Danish F-16
Deadline:
Country:
Description
Argentina is nearing the finalization of a deal to acquire 24 used F-16 fighter jets from Denmark, marking significant progress for its air force after years of searching for financially viable alternatives. The quest for a suitable replacement for its Mirage aircraft, which were retired in 2015, was hampered by a British veto on equipment containing UK-made components. This notably prevented the purchase of ten F/A-50 Golden Eagle jets from South Korea in 2020. Due to these restrictions, Argentina had considered purchasing the JF-17 Thunder, developed by China and Pakistan, with a loan request of 664 million dollars proposed in the 2022 budget for a purchase that ultimately did not occur. Although the JF-17 had the support of the Argentine air force for its capabilities and the weapons package offered by China with few restrictions, this acquisition would have bolstered Chinese influence in South America, a prospect that changed with the United States' authorization for Argentina to acquire Danish F-16s last October. The election of President Javier Milei halted the discussion on the JF-17, reflecting a desire not to deepen ties with Beijing. The confirmation of the purchase of 24 F-16s by President Milei on March 20 marks the end of a long and complex process, with a total cost estimated at 650 million dollars, divided between the aircraft and ammunition.

Deadline:
Country:
Description
According to Bild news site, Germany has reportedly begun the ordering process for AGM-158B Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles with Extended Range (JASSM-ER) rounds from the US. The JASSM missile orders were said to be linked with the F-35 order Germany has been expected to formalise. The out-of-service date of the Taurus, however, has not yet been disclosed by the Bundeswehr. According to Bild, a number of air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles were part of the F-35 fighter deal, but the JASSM was delayed. Without citing sources, the German outlet said an official purchase contract was now expected before the end of this year.
