Haiti will rebuilding its armed forces, which were demobilized 22 years ago, after the re-assumption of power by President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who was overthrown in 1991.

The process began in October 2011 with the reinstatement of the Ministry of Defense, which had also been dissolved in 1996, and materialized on November 18, 2017 when President Jovenel Moïse officially remobilized the Haitian Armed Forces ( FAH) in the framework of the celebration 214 anniversary of the Battle of Vertières. On that occasion, the first 150 soldiers of the FAH paraded, who were trained by the Armed Forces of Ecuador.

More recently, on March 28, President Moïse, accompanied by Defense Minister Hervé Denis and the commander-in-chief of the FAH, Lieutenant General Jodel Lessage, made the official presentation and installation of the officers. of the General Staff of the new Armed Forces.

 

Minister of Defense, Hervé Denis, declared on that occasion that the recruitment of 500 citizens between 18 and 25 years old and with full secondary education had already been ordered. He specified that the initial forecast is to establish the Armed Forces at the level of 3,000 men, but that the plan, until the beginning of the next decade, is to have 5,000 military personnel.

At present, the FAH are constituted by the following elements: Corps du Génie (Corps of Engineers), Garde Environnementale (Environmental Guard), l'Unité d'Intervention Medico-sanitaire (Medical-Health Intervention Unit) and Garde Frontalière (Border Guard).

We must add to the security structure of Haíti, the Police Nationale d'Haïti (National Police), which groups more than 9,000 men and women and also has a naval component, Gardes-Côtes d'Haïti ( Coast Guard), which has about a dozen patrol boats.
