The Portuguese Air Force (FAP) is in negotiations with the company Embraer Defesa e Segurança for the purchase of ten EMB-314 Super Tucano aircraft, with which it plans to replace the Franco-German training aircraft Alpha Jet – withdrawn from service in 2018-, according to what was reported by sources close to the FAP.
Seen as an aircraft capable of training new Portuguese pilots, the Super Tucano would also be used to support Portugal’s military operations under the flag of the United Nations.
If the sale is completed, Portugal will become the first European NATO operator to use the Super Tucano. In addition to the recognized operational qualities, political-industrial aspects connecting Portugal and Brazil would enter the business.
