The Russian Ministry of Defense signed a contract for the modernization of the Tu-95MS strategic bombers to the level of the Tu-95MSM.
The contract for the work was signed with Tupolev PJSC.
As part of the modernization, the Tu-95MSM received a new radar, a new information display system, a modernized defense complex, modernized NK-12MPM turboprop engines with the installation of new AV-60T propellers.
The Tu-95MSM is the first strategic missile carrier. It is designed to conduct combat missions while protecting the country’s remote borders. The upgraded Tu-95MSM variant, like its Soviet-era predecessor, is a long-range four-engine turboprop strategic bomber that can be armed with nuclear cruise missiles such as the Kh-101 / Kh-102 (nuclear variant ) from cruise to air launch, as well as the Kh-55 subsonic cruise missile. The aircraft can carry six missiles on an internal rotary launcher, while the modernized Tu-95MSM variant can carry an additional eight to ten missiles under its reinforced wings.
