The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) signed, last Friday 17, a contract for the acquisition of a new batch of Diehl IRIS-T missiles, of the latest generation, of the short-range air-to-air type, which will be part of the armament of the F-39 Gripen fighters.
Built by a pan-European consortium led by Germany’s Diehl BGT Defence, the IRIS-T has among its main features the use of a 5th generation active infrared array image finder; target tracking with integration into the pilot’s helmet sight and other sensors; and high maneuverability, with the use of thrust vectoring that directs the combustion gases of the missile propellant.
Intelligent missile, of great maneuverability and resistant to electronic countermeasures, one of its differentials is the possibility of tracking the target with the integration in the sight of the pilot’s helmet and other sensors.
It is also characterized by significant increase in firing zones, improved acquisition range and increased accuracy of impacts (increased PK). These features make it possible to successfully attack targets during combat operations in an environment with enormous interference from electronic countermeasures.
