Algeria, Morocco; Governments plan 2023 defense budget boost

Algeria has boosted its military budget to $22.7 billion by 2023, the same year Rabat forecasts $5.2 billion.

The race that Algiers and Rabat maintain to increase their military arsenals continues, but with very unequal balance. Morocco has presented defense budgets for the year 2023 of 5,200 million dollars, which is equivalent to an increase of 3.6% compared to this year, and places the Department of Defense in the second ministry that obtains more money from the state coffers for next year. It is only surpassed by the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports.

However, the rise is far from the one announced shortly before by Algeria, its main opponent, which shoots its military spending planned for 2023 by 130%, to add 22,700 million dollars. This is more than four times the expenditure planned by its neighbor, Morocco, which in2020 already tried to bring positions closer by raising its military budget by 30%, which now seems scarce in the face of the Algerian push.
