UK; MoD plans to launch  £90M tender for 1,100 ATVs

According to an article by Army Technology on August 31, 2023, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has initiated discussions with the defense industry regarding the potential procurement of more than 1,000 4×4 and all-terrain vehicles. This initiative falls within the framework of the Light Tactical Mobility Platform (LTMP) program, comprising both the LTMP Medium and LTMP Light components.

In terms of specifics, the LTMP Medium segment is exploring a 4×4 solution, while the LTMP Light phase is aimed at vehicles with all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-like capabilities. The combined budget for these two variants is expected to surpass £90 million ($114.3 million).

The LTMP Medium aspect, with an estimated value of around £80.9 million ($102.8 million), envisions the acquisition of up to 48 Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs), with the potential for expanding the contract to include up to 863 UTVs, covering initial procurement. These vehicles are expected to accommodate a driver and passenger side by side, with a minimum on-road speed of 65 kph when towing the platform’s maximum load. The payload capacity, inclusive of personnel, equipment, and supplies, is projected to exceed 600 kg. The contract outlines an initial support period of five years, with an option for a subsequent extension of five years.

Similarly, the LTMP Light initiative contemplates the acquisition of up to 156 Light UTVs, with the possibility of expanding the contract to a maximum of 311 platforms, inclusive of the initial procurement. These Light UTVs are required to maintain a minimum ground clearance of 180 mm when fully laden, achieve a minimum speed of 40 kph on roads while towing a weight of 450 kg, and support a payload capacity of at least 270 kg. Parallel to the LTMP Medium project, the LTMP Light program includes an initial five-year support period, with the potential for extension.

The competitive process invites potential suppliers to provide two sample vehicles and trailers for a trial phase scheduled from February to April 2024. Estimated costs suggest that each LTMP Medium platform could cost around £94,000 ($119,780), while a single Light UTV may be priced at approximately £33,000 ($41,910).
