Since 2023, the Austrian army has embarked on a strategic transition, replacing its fleet of 900 aging Pinzgauer 4×4 light trucks, which date back to the 1970s, with a new generation of Military Utility Vehicles (MUV) from Iveco. This ambitious project, valued at 42.5 million euros, marks a significant shift in the operational capabilities of the Austrian military.
The contract with Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV) includes the delivery of 125 units, comprising 70 command units and 55 radio engineering units. The first deliveries have already taken place, signaling the start of a new era for the Austrian armed forces. The goal is to fulfill this contract by 2026, reflecting Austria’s commitment to maintaining a well-equipped and technologically advanced defense force.
Iveco’s MUV, based on the commercial Iveco Daily model, is a robust 7-ton vehicle capable of transporting a maximum payload of 4 tons. Its design allows for operation in extreme weather conditions, ranging from -32°C to +49°C. The vehicle features a permanent 4×4 transmission with lockable central, front, and rear differentials, and a power take-off equipped transfer case. An independent front torsion bar suspension system ensures stable and reliable handling, even in challenging terrains.
