At the moment, a study is already underway to analyze the feasibility of integrating NSM into the new S-80 submarines. In the medium term, the plan is to launch this missile also from aerial platforms, specifically, the helicopters of the Aircraft Flotilla, as confirmed by the Navy itself at a recent forum on missiles in Madrid, organized by the Círculo Foundation.
In the first case, there is still no operational submarine version of this missile. The one that has already been developed is the variant for helicopters. India opted for the NSM HL (Helicopter Launched) in 2020 to arm its new MH-60R Romeos, becoming the first operator of the helicopter version of the missile.
The Navy has chosen this same aircraft to replace its veteran SH-60Bs, so everything points to Spain being able to follow in India’s footsteps. It should be noted that the MH-60R is already prepared to use the NSM with a range of up to 185 km, therefore, the integration process a priori would be simple.
