The Argentine Army will incorporate a total of 156 Guarani 6×6 armored vehicles: 120 vehicles in Personnel Transport mode (VCBR-TP) equipped with the Ares Remax tower with machine gun; 27 Infantry Battle Tanks (VCBR-CI), with UT30-BR turret with 30 mm gun; and nine Command Post vehicles (VCBR-PC).
This was agreed by the Argentine Minister of Defense, Jorge Taiana, and the Foreign Minister of Brazil, Mauro Vieira, in a letter of intent signed by both countries, during the official visit of Lula da Silva to Buenos Aires, with the aim of promoting negotiations for the acquisition of the Brazilian armored vehicle manufactured by Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV).
This agreement formalizes a decision that had been made for quite some time. Both Taiana and senior Army commanders had already pointed out that the Brazilian car was the best option for Argentina, to the detriment of bids for General Dynamics’ Stryker and Norinco’s VN-1D1.
In mid-2021, a test of the Guarani loaned by the 5th Mechanized Cavalry Regiment of the Brazilian Army was held in the country. During the 30 days he remained in the country he was subjected to technical-operational tests, weapons and his capabilities to be airborne in a Hercules C-130H aircraft.
