Argentina; Government requests German credits to purchase submarines

Argentine Defense Minister Jorge Taiana closed his European tour with a meeting in Berlin with his German counterpart, Christine Lambrecht. Among the main issues on the bilateral agenda was the financing of the submarine project for the Argentine Navy (ARA).

“The acquisition of submarines is fundamental to sustain our defense policy and the projection that our country has in Antarctica and throughout the maritime coast,” Taiana said. “We ask Germany for political and economic support to be able to finance this project, there is willingness and willingness to work together according to Argentine needs,” added the head of the Defense Ministry.

According to the Ministry, the bilateral meeting addressed various issues of cooperation in the field of Defense. But the submarine project “was one of the main points of the conversation.” The financing of the project, the defense system and the transfer of technology with the Argentine participation through the Tandanor shipyard were discussed.

Before his meeting with the German minister, the Argentine delegation led by Taiana toured the shipyard of the Firm Thyssenkrupp located in the city of Kiel, in northern Germany, where he observed the production line of the submarines and learned about the technological advances in these weapons systems.
