Argentine Navy Evaluates Acquisition of Submarines, Multipurpose Vessels and Helicopters
The head of the Cabinet of Ministers, Nicolás Posse, indicated that proposals are being studied but the deadlines for incorporation have not yet been defined
In his first management report presented to the Argentine Senate, the head of the Cabinet of Ministers, Nicolás Posse, indicated that proposals for the construction of submarines in the country are being evaluated, as well as the incorporation of multipurpose vessels and helicopters for the Argentine Navy (ARA).
As for submarines, several bids are being evaluated for the construction of three units of the Scorpene class or class 209. A transition submarine is also being considered. The timelines for the incorporation of these weapons systems are still being discussed.
During 2023, then-Defense Minister Jorge Taiana announced that the acquisition of submarines for the Argentine Navy was a priority. To advance this project, Taiana toured Europe to visit the Naval Group shipyard in France and the Thyssenkrupp shipyard in Germany. In Brazil, he toured the Itaguaí Construcciones Navales shipyard. During these visits, he assessed the capabilities of different submarines and discussed financing options
