Brazil; Competitors linen up for the Army’s 155mm wheeled tender

The Brazilian Army analyzes proposals to acquire new self-propelled combat armored vehicles

All proposed systems feature a NATO-standard 155 mm howitzer, with 52 calibers and the ability to use modern long-range and guided munitions

In the middle of last year and as part of the Army’s Strategic Armored Forces Program (Prg EE F BId), the Brazilian Army launched a request for proposal/request for tender (RFP/RFT) for the future acquisition of 36 armored fighting vehicles with 155 mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers (Vbcoap 155 SR).

The deadline for the submission of these RFPs/RFTs was February 6, 2024, through the Material Headquarters of the Brazilian Army Logistics Command, in Brasilia (DF).

According to Paulo Bastos, an engineer, armored specialist and editor of the website Tecnologia e Defesa, a Brazilian publication associated with Infodefensa, the following 155 mm wheeled and 52-caliber self-propelled artillery systems were presented by their respective manufacturers: Yugoimport SDPR, from Serbia, with the Nora-B52 M21 system; North Industries Corporation (Norinco), China, with the SH15 system; Nexter, from the KNDS group, from France, with the Caesar system; Makina ve Kimya Endüstrisi (MKE) from Turkey with the Yavuz system; Excalibur Army of the Czech Republic, representing Konštrukta Defence of Slovakia, with the Zuzana 2 system; Elbit Systems, of Israel, and its Brazilian subsidiaries Ares Aeroespacial e Defesa and AEL Sistemas, with the ATMOS system; and Denel Land Systems, South Africa, with the T-5/52 system.

As reported, the schedule of activities for the Vbcoap 155mm SR tender should follow the following stages: tender analysis period, between February 19 and March 01, 2024; notification of companies disqualified in Phase 1A, February 23, 2024; announcement of the shortlist, between 04 and 08 March 2024; notification of companies disqualified in Phase 1B, between 04 and 08 March 2024; call for negotiations, between 04 and 08 March 2024; trading period, between 18 March and 4 April 2024; receipt of the final proposal (BAFO), between 15 and 19 April 2024; submission of the result, by May 3, 2024; and signing of the contract, 07 May 2024 (forecast).
