The Chilean Air Force (FACH) began the process of purchasing 14 light helicopters that will replace the Bell UH-1H Iroquois flight material in service since the late 1960s at the institution.
According to Defense News, the FACh sent a request for information (RFI) to potential suppliers in late February after receiving approval from the Government of Chile.
Among the reasons for acquiring new rotary-wing aircraft are the high cost of flight hour and maintenance of the UH-1H fleet and a decrease in its availability with less than half of the 10 aircraft in operation.
The RFI notes that the replacement helicopters will be required to offer the same capabilities as the Bell UH-1H and be able to operate day and night search and rescue missions, as well as provide medical evacuation, administrative transport and liaison services.
Other requirements include a glass cockpit and external lights compatible with night vision goggles, as well as auxiliary equipment including wire cutters, an external loading hook, a winch with a load capacity of up to 200 kg and snowshoes.
According to a source quoted by Defence News, “the acquisition of the new helicopter is urgent” and the process leading to selection and purchase “is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2023.”
