The equipment, which will be received from November, will reinforce, together with a new military infrastructure, security on the border with Haiti
The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, announced the acquisition from the Spanish firm Urovesa of 21 Vamtac ST5 4×4 armored vehicles, which are part of a larger purchase project that also includes helicopters and reconnaissance aircraft, in order to guarantee security on the border with Haiti.
The president said, during a ceremony held in the border province of Dajabón, that the acquired material will be received between next November and January 2023. The measures are focused on controlling the illegal entry of immigrants, protecting the border area and contributing to formalize trade for the benefit of both countries, especially in the face of the instability that the Haitian nation is going through.
As announced by President Abinader, the equipment includes, in addition to the 21 Vamtac ST5, four riot trucks, six Bell UH-1Huey II helicopters and ten new aircraft for reconnaissance and surveillance of an unspecified type and model.
