According to information published by Powergame on May 2, 2024, after extensive deliberations, the Greek Navy has finally received the green light to proceed with the long-delayed mid-life upgrade of its four MEKO-class frigates.
The Greek Navy’s Hydra-class MEKO 200 frigates, in service since the mid-1990s, are undergoing a significant modernization program to extend their operational life. These frigates, designed for anti-submarine warfare, anti-air warfare, and surface warfare, are about 117 meters long, displacing around 3,200 tons, with a beam of 14.8 meters.
Their propulsion system typically includes a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) configuration, which allows for efficient cruising and high-speed capabilities. The frigates have a maximum speed of approximately 31 knots and a range of about 4,000 nautical miles at a speed of 18 knots.
The mid-life upgrade (MLU) will focus on enhancing both the platform and combat systems. TKMS, the original manufacturer, is responsible for the ship platform modifications, which include structural upgrades and potential improvements to the ship’s propulsion and mechanical systems. Thales, a key defense electronics supplier, will provide the combat system, including the TACTICOS combat management system, which integrates various sensors and weapon systems on the ship.
