Lithuania announced the acquisition of several 120 mm Expal 120-MX2-SM towed mortars from Spain. This acquisition, valued at approximately 9.8 million Euros, includes the mortar systems and a complete set of spare parts. The contract was finalized in autumn 2022 between the Defence Materiel Agency of the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and EXPAL Systems, S.A. We had previously reported on this on Army Recognition dated October 31, 2022.
The Expal 120-MX2-SM mortar system meets NATO standards, demonstrating its reliability and compatibility with international military norms. It is distinguished by its mobility and versatility, enhancing the firepower and precision of infantry and artillery units. These features are crucial for adapting to varying tactical demands and ensuring robust indirect fire support on the battlefield.
A key feature of Lithuania’s new defense equipment is its effective range, which extends up to 8 kilometers. This extended range, combined with its precision, makes the Expal mortar system an interesting addition to the Lithuanian Armed Forces, enhancing their operational capabilities and readiness in various combat scenarios.
The system complies with NATO standards for weaponry. Besides the 120 mm, Expal Systems produces mortar systems of 60 and 81 mm. The company’s entire ammunition portfolio is in service in over 35 NATO and allied countries.
