The war in Ukraine has boosted the sale of German Leopard 2 tanks. Lithuania is the latest country to reveal its plans for the acquisition of this German model, in this case within a program estimated at 2,000 million euros. The country’s president’s top national security adviser, Kęstutis Budrys. He has revealed this acquisition “will be one of the largest purchases of Lithuania, not only for the Army, but for Lithuania as a whole.”
The cost of 2,000 million includes, in addition to the price of the tanks themselves, also ammunition, logistics and related supplies. “It’s a great buy,” Budrys added after detailing this point. At the moment no agreement has been formalized, although the Minister of Defense of the country, Arvydas Anušauskas, has revealed that the objective is to sign a letter of intent with Germany for the acquisition of these battle tanks.
At the moment it has not transcended neither the number of tanks that are intended to acquire nor the specific variant. A few months ago, Lithuanian Lieutenant General Valdemaras Rupšys advanced the country’s plans to acquire 54 tanks with which to equip an Army that currently has none.
The Czech Republic, Italy and Germany are among the European countries that in recent weeks have revealed plans to purchase Leopard 2 battle tanks. At least eight nations of the old continent (including Germany and Lithuania) process the purchase of almost 2,000 tanks.
