images circulating on social media confirmed the recent arrival of four Bell 412EPX helicopters on Somali soil. This transfer, valued at $16 million, was carried out by the Italian government, marking the most significant delivery of military equipment since the lifting of the arms embargo imposed on Somalia.
These helicopters, known for their robustness and versatility, are specifically designed for various missions, ranging from troop transport to medical evacuation, as well as search and rescue operations. Their ability to adapt to difficult conditions and their proven reliability make them valuable assets for the Somali armed forces, which are engaged in the fight against the insurgent group Al Shabaab.
The delivery of these aircraft comes at a time when the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has begun the gradual withdrawal of its troops, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolutions 2628 and 2670. This withdrawal, which involves the evacuation of 2,000 soldiers by the end of June and another 3,000 by September, aims to progressively transfer security responsibilities to Somali forces.
