Turkey; Navy to upgrade Gür-class submarines

STM, recognized for its contributions to naval engineering within Turkey, has been selected to manage system procurement and integration for the mid-life update of the Type-209/1400 Gür-class Submarines. This project is aimed at modernizing vital navigation, mechanical, and communication systems to prolong the submarines’ operational lifespan.

This initiative is conducted under the guidance of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey’s Defence Industry Agency (SSB), involving STM alongside other Turkish defense entities such as Aselsan, ASFAT, and HAVELSAN.

This collaborative effort is part of a strategic push towards enhancing the self-reliance of Turkey’s defense technology capabilities, specifically targeting the modernization of the Turkish Navy’s submarine fleet to bolster its presence in the strategic maritime domain known as the Blue Homeland.

An extension to the scope of the Preveze-Class Submarine Modernization Program to include the Gür-Class Submarines was formalized with a contract amendment signed on January 17, 2024. The program’s initial phase will concentrate on updating selected navigation, machinery, and communication systems, aiming for completion within six years.

Additionally, STM has been tasked with the integration of the domestically developed Integrated Combat Management System (MÜREN) by TÜBİTAK BİLGEM into both Preveze and Gür-class submarines.
