The potential acquisition comes amidst differences between the UAE and the United States over the former’s intention to procure F-35 jets. Abu Dhabi had broken off negotiations with Washington citing ‘difficult conditions.’

One of the ‘difficult conditions’ imposed by the U.S. is understood to be disengagement with Chinese firms implementing 5G telecommunications services in the UAE.

It is also unusual for the UAE to announce potential defence acquisitions before deals are signed.

The L15 Light Attack-Trainer Aircraft is a new generation light combat aircraft to also serve as a trainer jet.
