Uruguay; Government confirms intention to buy UK Bae Hawk 200

The option to purchase the Uruguayan Air Force  would be a batch of single-seat units of the 200 series, along with two or three two-seaters of the 100 series

The Uruguayan Government has made official its intention to acquire Bae Hawk 200 aircraft, as confirmed by Infodefensa.com. The option to purchase the Uruguayan Air Force would be a batch of single-seat units of the 200 series, along with two or three two-seaters of the 100 series, to recompose some of the capabilities lost with the loss of most of its combat aircraft, currently having only one or two Cessna A37B Dragonfly in flight order.

The purchase still has to overcome the legal barrier imposed by the United States government in terms of the modifications that the US government has requested to the Demolition Act, approved within the Urgent Consideration Act (LUC) years ago. The amendments include a ban on the Uruguayan Air Force shooting down potential civilian aircraft in violation, something the United States does not approve.

The Law of Demolitions was not included in the referendum that was voted popularly to overthrow a few dozen articles of the LUC, so it can be modified by law with a simple majority, something that the government has today and to which opposition votes would easily be added.

It only remains now to wait to see the political movements of the Uruguayan Government to lift the US veto and thus be able to access the much-needed air resources for its Air Force.
